The Gravity of Love
A Metamedia Lived Inquiry Contemplation on the Idea of Love as a Force like Gravity
Happy Valentines Day!
The following is my lived inquiry contemplation on the idea of the gravity of Love using AI, art, prose, poetry and the moving image.
This contemplation includes some personal reflections on the idea of love being a force like gravity using prose and art, along with a taste of my favorite cinematic love story, a poem on the Gravity of Love co-generated with Google Gemini and some quotes on the Gravity of Love as well.
Personal Reflections
I have been graced with the experience of being in the presence of mystics from every path. Christian monks, Sufi sheiks, Hindu gurus, Jewish rabbis and even homeless mystics, all had a loving presence that pulled me in like a gravitational field .
I have had three Near Death Experiences in which I have felt an unconditional love so deep and vast I felt completely held within its field like a planet being held in place by the unseen forces of gravity.
And I have felt a romantic love that went beyond the connection to an individual other; our attraction was beyond the physical and felt like we were in the pull of some vast unseen force that held the whole universe in its embrace.
With everything happening in the world right now I feel the call to reconnect with the gravity of love, hoping it will help me cope with and possibly transcend all the politics of hate and fear swirling around the mediasphere.
The Gravity of Love in the Cinema
People are often shocked when I tell them that I believe that Christopher Nolan’s space epic Interstellar is the greatest love story ever told in the cinema. That is because at the heart of this film is the story of an aging astronaut and single father in a dying world who travels across the universe, against all odds, to save humanity and his children. It is his love that keeps him going in the face of oblivion and it is love that gives him the strength to do the impossible. Not only that but this magnificent work also existentially explores the nature of love itself as being, like gravity, a real and actual force in the universe.
The Gravity of Love Poem and Image (by MAK and Google Gemini AI)
I asked Google’s new LLM Gemini to: “Write a sacred poem in the style of Rumi about "the gravity of love" exploring the different forms of love that evolve through greater and greater circles of care and concern from self love, to love of family, to Love of friends, to love of members of the same group, same society, all of humanity, all sentient beings and finally all of creation.”
The Gravity of Love
Within the heart's own chamber, love ignites, A spark that whispers, "Rise, and claim your heights." This ember, self-love's flame, it gently tends, A solace whispered, where the spirit mends.
But love expands, a river seeks the sea, Embracing kin, in sweet consanguinity. In blood and bone, a tender bond is spun, A tapestry of care, where two become one.
Then friendship's hands reach, with warmth and grace, A circle formed, where hearts find their own space. In laughter shared, and tears that softly fall, A solace found, that answers friendship's call.
Beyond the tribe, where loyalties reside, Love's gaze extends, with open arms so wide. It sees the stranger, not with distant eyes, But as a mirror, where its own reflection lies.
And as it widens, love transcends the line, That separates the self, from the divine. It sees in all, a spark of the same fire, A shared humanity, where souls aspire.
No longer bound by borders, creed, or kind, Love's cosmic dance, all limitations unconfined. It cradles creatures, great and infinitesimally small, Embraces every atom, heeding nature's call.
From mountain peak to ocean's deepest swell, Love's gravity enfolds, a universal spell. It binds the stars, and spins the moonlit tide, In this grand dance of being, where all reside.
So let your love expand, like wings unfurled, Embrace all creation, in this wondrous world. For in this sacred gravity, you'll find, The truest essence, of the loving mind.
Remember, Rumi, the poet of whirling dervishes, reminds us that love is a journey, a dance, a continuous expansion of the heart. May your own love journey be filled with grace and beauty.
